Technology and your singing lesson

I have been teaching for over 20 years now. I must say that my experience with the logistics of a lesson have improved greatly with the cell phone, and Internet.

I wanted to take a moment and point out the subtle changes that I have witnessed.

Today for example my student wanted to sing a piece from Hairspray which I did not own. In a moment we were able to pull up the karaoke version on YouTube for her to sing to.

Later in the lesson I was playing through my Chicago score, which I only had one of. Rather than her looking over my shoulder to view the lyrics, she pulled them up on her phone.

Recording is so easy now as well. I have Logic and Garage Band on my computer, and a good microphone set up. It takes a moment to create a file for a new song. I can record my student, and email them the song, or lesson we have had.

These are great tools. I remember in the past, I would hear of a song and have to go to a music library or music book store with the hope of finding it. Easy with popular music, but challenging with varied repertoire.

Last example; I was in the car the other day listening to a classical station on Sirius Radio, I fell in love with a piano piece. I did not have the time to hear the end of it. When I was younger to figure out what song was playing on the radio you had to wait till the end for the DJ to announce it. I was able to push a button and see the name of the piece. I then came inside and googled it. The sheet music was available on line for free (because it is an older piece), I downloaded it printed it out, and was playing it within minutes. Totally satisfying.

That is pretty awesome. Most published sheet music is available on line for purchase.

It is all so instant. I love going to libraries and bookstores, but in my hectic life, having the ability to get what I need so quickly is a true pleasure! I was just taking a moment to appreciate how technology has added to my timely art of singing. :)

Sing well everyone!
