The perfect audition space and experience may NEVER exist – be prepared.

You practice your song over and over at home, in the shower, at your voice teacher’s house. You are probably used to some good acoustics, people listening, quiet…

Well, that more than often will not be the case when you get to your audition or performance and have to sing. Be ready for it. Don’t just practice your songs in the “best environment.” Practice them in the worse environment, until you are comfortable. That way, anything better will just be a plus for you.

For example:

I had to do an audition in Las Vegas years ago. I drove out there from Los Angeles with a friend who was also auditioning. We were totally prepared and practiced. When we got there though, everything was NOT working in our favor. The weather in Las Vegas is so dry that our voices were NOT happy. On top of that, the audition was downstairs in an ugly Church Basement. It was fully carpeted with some sort of material on the walls to BAFFLE sound- (the opposite of what you want when you are singing live without a microphone). The piano was very loud and not completely in tune. Singing in there felt like you were singing into a vacuum. It really all felt wrong and turned out to be such a waste of an audition. If I had known how bad I was going to do, I definitely would NOT have driven out there.

But it was a huge lesson for me. I had been so used to babying my voice, being totally hydrated, singing in great acoustic environments, that it was a shock to hear the sound coming out of my mouth during that audition.
