Reclaiming My Voice

The first time I started singing, in an organized fashion, was in first grade. I was in a small group and we sang Candle on the Water (from Pete’s Dragon) at our recital. From that point on and continuing through my senior year of high school; I was involved in singing in some way or another. It was something I was good at and something that I really enjoyed doing. I got to go to area all state, perform with a local professional choir, and attended music camp between my junior and senior year of high school. Yes, singing was my passion but I was also realistic enough to know that I couldn’t make a career out of it unless I intended to teach.

That being said, after I graduated from high school, my opportunities to sing were limited to non-existent. There were local church choirs but I didn’t have the time and/or motivation to join. So I stopped singing, except in a children’s songs capacity, until this past year. One of the things that I was looking for in a church was an active choir. I finally found that in Holy Spirit and I joined the choir in October of this year. Being able to sing again, on a regular basis, has been one of the best things that’s happened to me in the past year because it’s something that I’m doing just for me. Except, by this point, I hadn’t been actively singing for over ten years and my voice was a little under used. Singing again regularly has helped, but in the past month I’ve also found something else that’s really helped: Voice Lessons to Go

Aside from extensive choir rehearsal, I did take voice lessons my junior year of high school. This was to help me prepare for my audition for music camp and to also help for a local music festival. But I hadn’t had voice lessons since then so I was very interested to see how this would go.

After looking through the CD jacket and after reading through the contents on the website, I decided to start from the beginning. I’ll admit though, for me, some of the exercises seemed too simple but I can also see the value in them. After all, before working out one should stretch and warm up their muscles so it makes perfect sense to start simple to warm up the voice. Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the lessons and I have found them useful as far as helping to get my voice back to where it used to be. I realize that I may not ever achieve that again and I’m okay with that. But if I can get close, that’s still good enough for me.

At my peak, I was able to sing from Alto 2 to Soprano 1, though I preferred to sing Soprano and that’s the voice range that I choose to sing in choir. I still can’t get back up that High C, but I’m working on it and with Voice Lessons to Go, I’m sure I’ll get there again.

The set that I received contained the complete set- Volumes 1-4 of Voice Lessons to Go and the CDs are also available for individual purchase. Other products include Vocal Repair and Kid’s Sing Out Proud. Voice Lessons to Go also offers digital versions of their products so you can access them from almost any device. I would definitely recommend Voice Lessons to Go for anyone who’s looking for a unique gift idea or for the casual singer who might want to take it up a notch. Voice Lessons to Go offers an affordable and high quality alternative to traditional voice lessons.
